We live in the information age, and it is all thanks to the internet. The internet has become such an important and integrated part of our lives that it is impossible to imagine life, as we know it, without it. The magnitude of its importance can be judged by simply looking at how it’s considered breaking the news if the internet goes down for even an hour.
Surely the internet is of extreme utility to us as a society, and nearly all aspects of our lives are connected in some way to the internet. An interesting question comes to mind, ‘what would happen to us if the internet dies suddenly?
While a complete shutdown of the internet is not possible, we can hypothetically assume the consequences of an event where the internet and other ways of communication are completely down.
Millions would be jobless
Till the end of 20th century, jobs like ‘social media manager’ didn’t exist, and the idea that such a position would not only exist but would also be a source of living for millions would have been laughable. The Internet is a source of millions of jobs, and some businesses exist entirely on the internet.
If the internet were to go down today, millions of people would be left jobless and no traditional skills to make a living. YouTubers and other social media celebrities would be left without any platform.
Banking system collapse
A few decades ago, the term “internet banking” was non-existent. Everything was done manually, and it took days to make money transfers or bank deposits. Such a thing is unimaginable nowadays due to instant transfers and deposits via the internet.
If the internet were to die suddenly, the whole banking system would either shut down or rollback to the old ways, which is not only inefficient but also extremely time-consuming.
Death of e-commerce and online shopping
E-commerce has been a boon to our current society – think of Amazon, Alibaba, eBay, Craigslist – all of these work through the power of the internet. These platforms provide their users an extreme shopping experience with the ability to compare and choose between several things.
Without the internet, the world will suddenly have to resort to the old ways of shopping, i.e., going to a shopping mall, spending hours upon hours trying to compare things with a lot of hassle. It will also limit businesses as it’s harder to reach wider audiences without internet.
End of the information age
One of the things that the internet has done for us is to make information accessible to all. Due to the internet and other social media channels, there is a huge amount of information right at one’s fingertips. This has revolutionized the way we seek and consume knowledge and information. Any thought, speculation, and the question can be answered in a matter of seconds.
However, if the internet were to stop existing, then the search engines would go with it. They are forcing us to be plunged back into the days of going through books upon books to find relevant information.
The Internet has revolutionized the way news is being published and consumed. The internet has liberated people from the shackles of TV and 5 minutes news segments at an hour. With the internet, the news can’t be manipulated by those in power. Every source and news can be check and recheck for legibility and news and media is no longer a puppet in a few powerful hands.
Now, if the internet goes down? We can see and understand what happens to the news when the internet is cut out by governments of countries. Without the internet, you can’t distinguish news from propaganda – making the masses oblivious to the reality and limiting them from forming any opinions or taking actions.
The world no longer a global village
The Internet can be a double-edged sword when it comes to socializing. On the one hand, it allows you to form new friendships with people living all the way across the world, on the other hand, it has made us disconnected to those around us.
If the internet were to go down, many would lose friendships. The only silver lining is that people would probably get out of their houses more often and find other sources of entertainment and socialization. Children will return to playgrounds and humans may revert back to an active lifestyle.
A sudden cut on the internet would cause a massive amount of population to feel not only extremely frustrated but also susceptible to monetary loss. Millions would be jobless because their jobs are dependent entirely on the internet. Tell us what do you think will impact you the most in case of internet disappears?
